Abstract

195 REVIEW OF BOOKS etc. After a preface, an introductory paper deals with Methodology in Talmudic History in which the author once again points to the principal errors in prevailing methodologies and defends his own program. The paper was written for the Historical Society in Israel to be read at the con- ference in celebration of its journal Zion in July 1984. After the mailing of its text to Jerusalem in January 1984, the invitation to present it was withdrawn. The fact illustrates the prevailing methodological controver- sies in Jewish circles concerning the right interpretation of the rabbinic heritage, and reminds us of a rabies theologorum taken to belong to past history. The reviews offer a good introduction to the author's convictions and modes of working, especially for those who are not yet acquainted with the principles underlying his astounding production. A. S.
