Abstract

TWO NOTES BY A. D. NOCK 1. The ASCLEPIUS and Quodvultdeus. My statement (in Festugi?re-Nock, Hermès TrismL;giste, II, 266), "Depuis S. Augustin jusqu'au debut du XIIe siecle, nous n'avons plus de testimonia pour 1'Asclepius" must be modified. The Liber de promissionibus et praedictionibus Dei, ascribed by Cas-- siodore to Prosper of Aquitaine, has a chapter en,titled De sub- 17ersione idolorum et templorum ( III 38; P.L. LI, 833 f-f.). This contains ( I ) a tale of Symmachus and of Eutropius; (2) the sup- posedly miraculous suspension of a chariot in the Serapeum at Alexandria (apparently a variant of a story told by Ruiinus) 1; (3) the mechanical dragon in a cave at Rome; (4) personal memories of the tem,ple of Caelestis at Carthage.
