TRIBUTES TO MARC RAEFF (1923-2008) N o t e f r o m t h e E d i t o r s Professors Samuel C. Ramer and Richard S. Wortman read tributes to Professor Marc Raeff at a memorial service held in his honor at St. Paul's Chapel o f Columbia University on February 7, 2009. The speakers also included Marc's daughters, Anne and Catherine Raeff, and Professor Marc Van De Mieroop, chair o f the Columbia University History De- partment. The memorial was attended by Lillian Raeff, by many friends o f the Raeff family, by a large number of Raeffs colleagues and former students, and by scholars and admirers from other institutions. Anne and Catherine recounted personal memories o f their father, while de Mieroop offered an overview o f Raeff s scholarly career and role at Columbia University. Ramer and Wortman spoke about R a e f f contributions to the field o f Russian history, also recalling his role as teacher; mentor, col- league, and friend. Within days o f the memorial, the editors o f this jour- nal secured permission from Professors Ramer and Wortman to publish their tributes. Because o f the general interest in Raei s life and career, editors of Ab Imperio also solicited these tributes for publication. Ramer and Wortman negotiated an agreement with Ab Imperio and J o u r n a l o f Modern Russian History a n d Historiography to publish their tributes in both venues. As journal editors, we wish to thank Marina Mogil-ner of Ab Imperio for her part in cooperating with this arrangement. We also wish to note that Ramer's and Wortman's tributes may appear in Russian trans- lation in a future issue of Novyi zhurnal. , Gary Hamburg Semion Lyandres
