Tree Anatomy . Alex Shigo, 124 pp., 89 colour plates, 1994. Shigo ' Trees, Associates, P.O. Box... - IAWA Journal, Vol. IS (2), 1994 REVIEW Tree Anatomy slide packages. Tree anatomy, below ground. 80 slides + script + audio tape narrated by the author. Price US$ 79.00 (+ US$ 4.00 for shipping & handling); Tree anatomy, above ground. Ibid. US$ 79.00 (+ US$ 4.00 for shipping and handling). The brochure for these new teaching aids claims that 'Tree Anatomy' is "the first, and the only, book on tree anatomy." That may be a somewhat far-fetched claim in a field that has seen over the last decades the emergence of several textbooks on tree biology, including comprehensive treatments of anatomical aspects. Nevertheless, the approach in 'Tree Anatomy' is original and refreshing. It illustrates in excellent colour macro- and microphotographs a number of basic principles of tree structure and development; all micrographs have been made with incident light, mostly of unstained or at most toluidine-blue- or IKl-stained material, so that the student looks at the image of freshly cut surfaces and gets a much better feeling for the living tree than he would from dehydrated and heavily stained sections. The text is very concise, and often limited to plate legends. The following subjects are dealt with: flowers and fruits, leaves and needles, buds, pith, young stems, bark, wood (the largest section, including developmental aspects and a comparison of stem and rootwood), roots and mycorrhizae, wound compartmentalisation, palm stems, wood growth in tropical trees, and recycling in the forest. Dynamic aspects receive constant attention and the author's love and respect for the majesty of trees exudes from every page. As we have become familiar with in the work of Alex Shigo, the meaning of 'anatomy' is taken in its widest sense to incorporate external morphology as well as internal macroand microstructure. With so many topics dealt with in a limited space, some have only received superficial attention. The same applies to the text on the audio tapes accompanying the two slide packages. A few slips, such as the erroneous statement that phloem rays give rise to the phelloderm, can easily be corrected in a following version. The sets of 80 fine colour slides on 'tree anatomy above ground' and 'tree anatomy below ground' include the plates from the book and many additional illustrations eminently suitable for teaching students of botany, forestry, and horticulture. Interested amateurs will also find the book and slides packages very useful. The comparative sets of rootwood and stemwood structure in the same slides are particularly instructive. On the audio tapes the speaking voice of the great author of the CODIT model and the 'touch trees' slogan provides added value to the whole package.
