Abstract

63 Toward Ereignis: An Initiatory Thinking Through of the Granting in Heidegger's Essay "Zeit und Sein" KENNETH MALY FOREWORD In "Zeit und Sein " Heidegger wants to focus upon a realm in which thinking is not a thinking of the entity. In this essay he attempts to think being without considering the grounding of being from out of the entity. That is, he attempts to think being without beginning with things or using things as a foundational way to go. When we thinkingly look at, pay heed to, a tree, for example, we can catch a glimpse of how the essence of the tree escapes the mathematical project. When the subject projects from the certainty of self in advance upon the tree, the tree's genuine way of being escapes that projection. We understand how modern science, and its fulfillment in technology, deter- mines in advance how the tree is there for man. The tree becomes available to man as something to be incorporated into the groundplan for nature that has been proposed in advance. To heed and to understand this is a first step away from mathematical thinking. Now, the second step for a thinker is to come
