VIRLANA T K A C Z (New York, NY, USA) TIME AND TRANSFORMATIONS IN LES' KURBAS'S PRODUCTION O F JIMMIE HIGGINS In the winter o f 1927, Vsevolod Meierkhol'd asked the audience which had come to see his production o f G o g o l " s Inspector General to stand and welcome the best director in the Soviet Union. That night the Moscow audi- ence stood and applauded Les' Kurbas.l 1 Les' Kurbas was a Ukrainian theatre director. In 1922, he created the Berezil' Artistic Association in Kyiv. During the eleven years o f its existence the Berezil' was one o f the most exciting and revolutionary theatres in Europe, and Kurbas one o f the most innovative directors o f his time. After a brief introduction to Kurbas, Ukrainian theatre and the Berezil', we will ex- amine Kurbas's work with his actors on Jimmie Higgins, a play he created on the basis o f Upton Sinclair's novel. We will examine how Kurbas used non- realistic approaches to acting and stage space to create a profound modern portrait o f a human being. In particular, we will take a close look at his use o f
