Abstract

REVIEW ARTICLE THE ZULU PROPHET LADUMA MADELA BY AXEL-IVAR BERGLUND (University of Uppsala) SCHLOSSER, Katesa, Zulu Mythology as written by the Zulu Prophet Laduma Madela, In Zulu and English, (plus a volume of appendixes). Arbeiten aus dem Museum für Völkerkunde der Universität Kiel, Vol. XI, Kiel, 1997, 3 88312 119. Whilst engaged in research into Zulu traditional thought-patterns and symbolism I was at Ceza quite frequently, partly because I was born there ('the place where my navel string was stored' as Zulu would say) and could therefore refer to Ceza as home, partly because of many opportunities to meet people who consciously were strictly Zulu, listen- ing to them and participating with thcm in their everyday lives. Many of the folk I met were conservative traditionalists who stuck rigidly to rituals, traditions, symbols and that outlook on life which is representative of Zulu people. I therefore had ample opportunities to visit and relate to Laduma Madela whose homestead was not far from Ceza mission hospital and parish centre. The homestead was surrounded by a rich Zulu cultural environment which very well suited and influenced Madela to develop into the impressive man he was. Not to have met him
