The title of the chapter, ‘Le Temps des crises (et cerises)’ is a pun ( crises rhymes with cerises ) that recalls the classic French song closely tied to the Paris Commune, ‘Le Temps des cerises’. Marx’s treatment of crises is similar to that of classes. He provides their determinations at the different logical moments of capital: its process of production, circulation, and reproduction. He does not formulate [ énonce ] a positive, coherent, and finished theory, but rather a negative theory, through successive approaches. 1 Capital’s Schizophrenia Marx’s excitement in the light of the American crisis of 1857 (the ‘Panic of 1857’) marked the feverish writing of the Grundrisse . Crisis appears in the text through the metaphor of madness. The schizoid tendencies of capital erupt into an open schizophrenia. The apparent unity of the commodity ‘is split’ between concrete labour and abstract labour, use-value and exchange-value: Money in its maximum fixation is itself a commodity and is distinguished as such from other commodities only by the fact that it expresses exchange value more perfectly.
