III The Suffering ,Servant Doczsnzeyat a Drama The Suffering Servant Document is a drama; that is the hypo- thesis which we offers. So far as we know, it is an altogether new hypothesis, never even suggested previously. Accordingly it needs clear and convincing demonstration. As we have reconstructed it, a single theme, the tragic life-story of the Servant, runs through the entire drama and imparts to it a positive literary unity. Here and there a small fragment of the original drama seems to be missing, but all in all the number and extent of these missing portions are small and for all practical purposes we have the drama in its complete and, as we have reconstructed it, so we firmly believe, its original form. The consideration of the time-element within the drama is the most decisive indication of its unity and dramatic character. The time unfolds steadily and systematically within the drama. Were we, merely to make our thought graphic and also to discuss it handily, to arrange this drama after the modern manner, we could readily divide it into three acts and these three acts
