Eerdmans Publishing Company, 2009). xxiv + 248 pp. $20.00 paper. The Spirit in the World was inspired by a 2006 symposium at the University of Southern California. Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen brings together Pentecostal scholars from around the world for this book, which includes a preface by Jürgen Moltmann, addressing three themes related to Pentecostal theology in its global context: spiritual empowerment, cultural diver- sity, and religious plurality; four essays are found within each section. In the ﬁrst essay on spiritual empowerment, Frank D. Macchia discusses Spirit baptism in a fresh way. He recognises the diversity among Pentecostals regarding Spirit baptism, and acknowledges that others have even pointed to other Pentecostal distinctives. Yet he explores how Spirit baptism is important in the New Testament, as well as to the Pentecostal move- ment both historically and globally, and should thus be central to Pentecostal theology. Next, Margaret M. Poloma contends that religious revivals have been connected to the practice of healing throughout history, and that the practice of healing declines when the revival tends towards
