The Questions of the Superiority of Angels and Prophets Between Az-Zamakhsharī and Al-Baydāwī THE QUESTIONS OF THE SUPERIORITY OF ANGELS AND PROPHETS BETWEEN AZ-ZAMAKHSHAR � AND AL-BAYD � W � * BY LUTPI IBRAHIM The aim of this paper, as its title indicates, is to investigate the differences between az-Zamakhshari and al-Bay4£wi in respect of Muslim theological doctrine : the superiority of angels and prophets and the extent which al-Bayçläwi manages to refute az-Zamakhsharï's views. BEFORE going any further it is, perhaps, relevant to quote the important passage from al-Baghdddi concerning the angels and the prophets : «The large majority of our friends maintain the superiority of the prophets over the angels; they do not, however, mention any- one individually. The followers of Tradition do not teach the superiority of the angels over the prophets except al-Hasan ibn-al- Fadl al-Bajd]T. The Mu'tazilites are divided on this point. The majority of them are of the opinion that the angels are superior to every prophet. Others, however, say that those angels who have committed no sin are more excellent than the prophets, whereas those who have committed even the slightest sin, such as Hdrat and Märüt, are inferior to the prophets.
