The Play of Wisdom: Turning Point in Biblical Theology 125 THE PLAY OF WISDOM: TURNING POINT IN BIBLICAL THEOLOGY Samuel Terrien Time is ripe for an ecumenical theology of the Bible. In Holy Scripture is found the only ground common to all the fami- lies of Christendom for the stimulus and control of theologi- cal thinking.1 In addition, since the Old Testament is begin- ning to receive for the first time in the history of the church its rightful place and modern forms of Marcionism are at"last being rejected as theological anti-Semitism, the moment has arrived for a fresh dialogue between Jews and Christians.2 What does it mean to put one's whole trust in one God? A new theology of the Bible will maintain the cardinal tenet of Judaeo-Christian faith, according to which the will of God for mankind is heard through the words of Scripture. At the same time a new theology of the Bible will respect the integrity of the human mind. It will not divorce intellect from faith, nor repudiate, therefore, the historical relativi- ty of the biblical literature. It will acknowledge that human language is the only tool available for any literary expres- sion.
