Abstract

BRIEF COMMUNICATIONS S K T . P R A S T H A - Skt. prastha- (m. amd n.) has been equated with Old Irish ros (Vendryes, Lexique 6tymologique de l'irlandais ancien R-43). This is, o n the surface, an exact equation; and as such it would point t o an archaic formation. Indeed, the equation o f the parts must be true: *pro+striae9-. But the presence ofpr.s.tha-, formally equal to Lith. pinatas -- Slavic prstb 'finger' and also Lat. postis, makes it likely that a form *pr-stHa- preceded the productive *pro-stHaO-. Therefore the agreement cannot be accepted as a true inherited equation. University o f Chicago ERIC P. HAMP S A N S K R I T L i L . z l T. Burrow (Kratylos 15, 1970 \[1972\] 55) will have Iild, because o f Pali -./-, f r o m *lizdd, and compares Gk. (Hes.) Xi~'et .~a6~et, deriving this f r o m *lizd-, But Xi~'et should be *lid-ie.; of. m y discussion (G\]urrnime Albanologfike S.F. 6 (1976) 1978, 4 1 - 2 ) o f Alb. loz, luan\] 'play, dance' < *leid-: Lat. lad6 < *loid.. 1 A less problematic preform for/~/~ would be
