THOMAS A. MEININGER (Toronto, Canada) The Journalists and Journalism of the Bulgarian Revival A Bulgarian periodical press first appeared in the second quarter of the nine- teenth century. Its emergence at that time was closely tied to the growing self- awareness and self-confidence of a developing cadre of Bulgarian intellectuals who were increasingly caught up with the idea of the Bulgarian national Revival (vf zrazhdane). As actual or potential "men of the pen," these educated Bulgars saw journalism as a natural medium for propagandizing concepts of Bulgarianism, Bulgarian self-identity, and Bulgarian separatism. Furthermore, journalism would allow intellectuals their first institutional chance to assert an independent voice in the leadership of the now spreading Bulgarian movement. In the early stages of the Bulgarian Revival, leadership had for the most part fallen to prosperous business- men both in the Bulgarian lands and abroad.
