ARTICLES 22 Young Gi Hong THE IMPACT OF CHARISMATIC PASTORAL LEADERSHIP ON RELIGIOUS COMMITMENT AND CHURCH GROWTH IN THE KOREAN MEGA-CHURCHES* Introduction . The rapid growth of Korean Protestantism is a noteworthy phenomenon which has attracted considerable scholarly attention. The Protestant population in Korean society has increased especially since the 1960s. The number of Protestant churches increased from 5,011 in 1960 to 33,897 in 1996. As can be seen in , the number of Protestant population had an enormous increase from 623,072 in 1960 to 8,760,000 in 1995. In 1995, Korean Christians occupied about 26 per cent of the whole population (Protestants, 19.7 per cent and Catholics, 6.6 per cent) (see Hong 1999a). 2 Growth of the Protestant Population In the context of the decline of institutional religions world-wide, the rapid growth of the Korean church attracts the interest of the world (Ro and .Hong, Young Gi is an ordained pastor at the Yoido Full Gospel Church, Seoul, Korea.
