7.9 THE GROTI US COLLECTION A T THE PEA CE PA LA CE A Concise Catalogue 80 INTRODUCTION The thoughts and ideas of Hugo de Groot are closely connected with the Peace Palace. This is reflected in the original function of the building as seat of the permanent Court of Arbitration and in the composition of the library that is established there. Not only was the formation of a Grotius collection an objective when setting up this library, but Martinus Nijhoff's generous gift of 55 editions of Grotius' legal masterpiece immediately formed, in the year of foundation, a firm basis for what has since expanded to becoming one of the most important collections of Grotius' works in the world. Its caretakers have not been content just to cherish it and for many decennaries the Peace Palace has, in fact, been a leading centre for the study of Grotius' spiritual heritage. Prominent among these was Dr. Jacob ter Meulen, librarian from 1924 to 1952. He was the man behind the Hague Grotius exhibition in 1925 to mark the three hundredth anniversary of the publication of De Jure Belli ac Pacis, he was editor of the "Concise Bibliography of Hugo
