The Formation of the Political System of the People's Republic of Bulgaria, 1944-1948 MITO ISUSOV THE FORMA TION OF THE POLITICAL SYSTEM OF THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF B UL GARIA, 1944-1948 The people's democracy emerged as a historical phenomenon during the revolutionary struggle against fascism, the totalitarian regimes, and the war. The fundamentals of the political system of the people's democracy were or- ganically linked with the fundamentals of the National, Fatherland and Dem- ocratic Fronts created during the 1930s and 1940s. The social class content originated from the disposition of the class and political forces in the separate countries.. The basic tendency in the development of the political system was the gradual consolidation of the hegemony of the working class and the leading role of the Communist Party. The people's democratic revolutions in Central and Southeastern Europe were one of the possible ways for defascization and democratization of society. The victory of the people's democratic revolution in Bulgaria on 9 September 1944, basically solved the main social contradictions of this stage, i.e., the contradictions between fascism and the broad revolutionary, democratic and antifascist forces.
