The author gives a comprehensive analysis of the relevant literature published since O. Mann’s pioneering work on the dialects of Lar, published in 1909. K e y w o r d s Lar, Larestan, Lari Dialects, Iranian Dialectology Since the beginning of the 17th century, Larestan has been formally re- lated to the province of Fars being its so-called tropic region (Pers. garms r t ). The dialects spoken here belong to the South-Western group of New Iranian. The present-day territory of the Lar ( L r , L rest n ) administrative unit (Pers. ahrest n ) is 33,600 sq. km.
