The Czechoslovak Ground Forces in the Munich Crisis: General Hasal's Notes of May, 1958 DOCUMENT RADOMÍR V. LUZA, editor (New Orleans, La., U.S.A.) The Czechoslovak Ground Forces in the Munich Crisis: General Hasal's Notes of May, 1958 On or about 28 September 1938, the commander-in-chief of the Czecho- slovak armed forces, General of the Army Ludvik Krej?í, headed a conference . of top military leaders at the Supreme Army Command Headquarters at the Schoeller castle in Ra?ice in central Moravia.1 The crucial issue confronting the military chiefs was whether Czechoslovakia should fight alone or comply with the demands of Great Britain and France to surrender Czechoslovak ter- ritory to Hitler, as the Czechoslovak government wished. The military were confident that the army could face Germany successfully for several months, provided Poland did not intervene. They took it as certain, however, that if Poland joined Germany in attacking the Czechoslovak Republic, the Czecho- slovak forces were condemned to defeat. At this most critical moment, the army leaders were ready to overthrow the timid government and to establish a military cabinet if Poland were to renounce its intent to attack the Repub- lic.2 All considerations that affected the decision of the army commanders were based on the high standard of preparedness of the defense http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png East Central Europe Brill
