Th e brief for the series includes the place of the churches in surround- ing society, the institutions of church life, manifestations of popular religion, the link with forms of national culture, and the intellectual tradition within and beyond Europe. It would be astonishing if any one volume could meet the whole brief in detail, and those expecting a history of theological study need to look elsewhere. Th is volume encompasses an historian’s view of change, and he does not aspire to achieve the impossible. We may note, however, that the Scots probably had the intellectual edge in theology, given their habit of studying in both German and American universities and seminaries.
