The Bible and Human Transformation: A Case Study from South Africa

The Bible and Human Transformation: A Case Study from South Africa 3 Articles I 4 The Bible and Human Transformation: A Case Study from South Africa J.N.J. KRITZINGER, South Africa Introduction ' When reflecting on the relationship between the Bible and human transformation, one must not operate only in the realm of ideas, but in fact start with an analysis of societal processes. To assist in this I am going to describe a self-help initiative in a South African "squatter" community and try to indicate what role the Bible has played (and is playing) in this process. We do not have here a process of transformation initiated by some change agent ("missionary") from outside, but an initiative arising from within a poor and marginalised community for the benefit of its weaker members. I am referring to the community schools or "private schools" in Winterveld, some 40 km north-west of Pretoria. Private schools in Winterveld "Private schools" is perhaps the least appropriate term to use for the fifteen or so institutions operating in buildings of corrugated iron, mud bricks or wooden boards in Winterveld, since in South Africa the term is associated with large double storey brick buildings, spacious sports fields and (mostly white) children from upper class families paying http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Mission Studies Brill
