SHORT COMMUNICATIONS C. D. GREEN 1) : The attraction of male cyst-nematodes by their females. Males and females of the nematode Panagrolaimrr.r rigidrr.r (Schneider) are both mobile, and are attracted to each other by substances secreted into aqueous agar gel (Greet 1964). The mobile males of the cyst nematodes Heterodera rosiochiensis Woll. and H. schachtii Schm. are also attracted to their sedentary females when both sexes are placed on moist agar surfaces (Green 1966). In such conditions stable gradients of volatile attractants are unlikely to be established in the air and attraction is probably by substances that diffuse in the aqueous phase. However, as some nematodes respond to gaseous gradients of C02 (Klingler 1963) and most known sex attractants are volatile, I have made tests to see whether the sex attractants of cyst nematodes can act in the gaseous phase and the male respond to olfactory stimulation. Mature females of H. schachiii are ovoid, white, and about 1 mm wide when attractive to their males. Females of this type were embedded singly in agar plates, 3 mm thick, some of which were left uncovered and others were covered with a 20 mm square cover glass raised on glass
