Unter Be- teiligung namhafter Wissenschaftler sucht es den Ertrag der dgyptologi- schen, hethitologischen und altorientalischen Forschung des sich neigenden Jahrhunderts dem Alttestamentler, Orientalisten, Religionswissenschaftler, Rechts-, Kultur- und Profanhistoriker auch der angrenzenden Kultur bereiche in zuverlassigen Ubersetzungen bereitzustellen. In this short but richly documented study, which contains his inaugural lecture at Leiden, Mulder rejects the common view that the Baal of 1 Kings xviii is to be equated with the Tyrian Melqart. He maintains that Ahab would have committed political suicide if he had elevated a foreign god at the expense of his own; that our evidence for Melqart is late, so that it is dubious whether we can read back details into the 9th century B.C. and then compare them with 1 Kings xviii; that equally good parallels can be found between 1 Kings xviii and features of the Ugaritic Baal cult; and that the essential historicity of the narrative, which upholders of the equation with Melqart tend to assume, is in doubt-Mulder prefers to speak of it as "haggada". This Innsbruck University dissertation (1977) examines the history of the scribal technique whereby the text of the Hebrew Bible was traditionally divided into two types of section, one beginning on a new line after a space extending to the end of the previous line, and the other continuing in the same line after a space.
