On March 23, 1982, General Efraín Ríos Montt, a born-again Pentecostal Protestant, took power in a military coup in Guatemala with two other oﬃ cers. After dismissing his coup part- ners, he carried out a devastating scorched-earth war of counterinsurgency for the next sixteen months that eﬀ ectively defeated the guerrilla movement the Guatemalan military had been ﬁ ghting for more than twenty years. How and why did these two events happen, and what rela- tionship do they have to each other?
