TARSAL WATER RECEPTOR CELL RESPONSES IN THE BLOWFLY PHORMIA REGINA by H. VAN DER STARRE (Zoological Laboratory, State University of Leiden, Leiden, The Netherlands) In 1962, EVANS & MELLON demonstrated electrophysiologically the existence of a water receptor cell in labellar taste hairs of Phormia regina, postulated on behavioural evidence (EVANS, 1961; DETHIER & EVANS, 1961). Although there were indications that in Phormia tarsal hairs contain water receptor cells too, up to now no definite electrophysiolo- gical proof has been reported (MCCUTCHAN, 1969a, p. 150, 1969b, p. 2065). In the blowfly Calliphora erythrocephala DEN OTTER & VAN DER STAR- RE (1967) found activity of two cells in the tarsal taste hairs upon stimulation with distilled water. In order to compare some of our results on Calliphora taste hairs with those obtainable from Phormia, we started a culture of Phormia regina in this laboratory from pupae kindly furnished by Prof. V. G. Dethier from Princeton University. The tarsal hairs we tried in Phormia were those referred to as D hairs by MCCUTCHAN (1969a and b). They are situated at the distal end of each tarsomere, next to bold spines, at the left and right sides. They are the longest hairs
