It originated with the custom of carrying into captivity all the conquered population, with the exception of those who, on account of their age, illness or poverty, were not likely to cause any trouble to the conquerors (2 Kings xxiv 14). But the extermination with which God has repeatedly threatened his people will not spare even the lowest of the people. Hence the sense of universality general- ly attributed to the expression. In course of time, however, the expression lost its original meaning and came to be used as a proverb- ial saying emphatically denoting an unlimited universality. If this is the true meaning, the sense of 1 Kings xiv 10 and parallel passages will be : 'I will cut off to ... all males, no one excepted'. Malta P. P.
