Harvey, ‘The arms of Madrid and the Warwick arms: some reﬂexions on the bear and ragged staff ’, Deyermond Vol., 177–87, suggests that the Madrid and Warwick coats of arms may share a common pagan origin associated with the cult of the divinities called Matronae.
