Hopewell explores the interplay of obsessions with sex, death, violence, and social alienation under­ pinning both genres, Out of the Past: Spanish cinema after Franco, London, British Film Institute, I92 pp. R. Fiddian and P. Evans, Challenges to Authority. Fiction and film in contemporary Spain, London, Tamesis, 94 pp., examine the interrelationships between Spanish lit. and cinema in the period I95g-82; contains individual readings of six texts including Martin-Santos's Tiempo de silencio and Saura's Carmen, and examines artful challenges to the authority of the State.
