The first is a full-scale scholarly company history; it represents a good exemplification of Solvay’s long support to science and other scientific endeavors. The second one is a small easy-to-read paperback on the company history; it also includes a CD and is clearly conceived for a general readership, despite relying on a scholarly background. However, the publisher has not maintained its normal standards with these two volumes either from the point of view of marketing, or from the perspective of the printing process (especially of images): first, the two books had a rather scant distribution; second, the many photos in the first, larger volume, are extremely pale, making some items even hard to recognize. Apart from that, both books are great. What are the characteristics of a “great” enterprise-history?
