In hermit crabs, patterns of behavior often differ in detail among species in a genus, but are similar in many ways within a genus. During precopulatory in- teractions, male diogenids (Clibanarius, Calcinus and Paguristes) hold and rotate the female's shell with their ambulatory legs while male pagurids hold the shell of the female with the minor cheliped (Hazlett, 1968a).
