Settling self-determination disputes in the post-colonial period: from armed struggle to complex power-sharing. Originally, the classical doctrine of self-deter- mination was designed to address territorial confl icts during the colonial period. However, today, challenges to the territory of states have entered a new dimension. Oftentimes, self-determination confl icts are no longer disputed between states, but are confi ned within state borders. Ethnic identity, as opposed to territorial aspirations, has become the focus of the present clashes. In this context, the concept of self-determina- tion and the technique of settling those complex secessionist ethnic confl icts need to be examined and adapted.
