The earliest followers of Jesus and messianic communities included women. Were these women enclosed in private spaces and embedded in household roles? Were they passive, silent, and compliant in their subju- gation to men in the patriarchal structures of the ancient world? Did the earliest Christians require this? Luise Schottroff responds with a re- sounding "no." Reading Second Testament texts through feminist lenses, she paints a picture of active women who struggled for survival and re- sisted their domination. Luise Schottroff presents her approach to understanding early Chris- tians from a feminist, liberationist perspective. She begins by context- ualizing herself as a German, feminist, Second Testament scholar whose purpose is the liberation of women, the poor, and the marginalized in the European context. She describes her struggles and experiments of oppression in the largely male German academic world. This self-reflec- tive positioning enables the reader to place Schottroff's insights and arguments within their contemporary context. Schottroff is informed by Latin American liberation theology and by her participation http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Biblical Interpretation Brill
