I believe that while the in- sights offered are especially valuable for feminists, non-feminist readers will find them beneficial too. The freshness, clarity, and charm of presenta- tion should appeal to all those who ponder the relevance of Scripture for contemporary interpreters - and communities. Abstract

118 This book belongs to a developing tradition of modern, transdisciplinary approaches. It champions plurality of opinion and a license to bring one's s total intellectual, emotional and cultural kitbag into the act of reading for interpretation. It is a feminist book, and deeply Jewish. To read it with Mieke Bal's books, which draw deeply on psychanalytic theories as well, provides better and other insights into biblical narratives - for details as well as for the legitimacy of the approach in general. I like this book, although it is not free from errors (for instance, pp. 28, 33, 107). The juxtaposition of psychoanalytic theory and reading under- scores the fact that interpretations are, ultimately albeit not always admit- tedly, conditioned by the fantasies and norms entertained (or suffered) by their time- and culture-bound practitioners. I believe that while the in- sights offered are especially valuable for feminists, non-feminist readers will find them beneficial too. The freshness, clarity, and charm of presenta- tion should appeal to all those who ponder the relevance of Scripture for contemporary interpreters - and communities.
