BURROW Oxford In addition to the well known roots pd- 'to drink' and pa- 'to protect' the Petersburg dictionary set up a third rootpa- 'to rise against, rebel', said to be used only in connection with the prefix ud. 1 The use of this utpa- is illustrated by the following examples: TS 3.2.10.2 y6 na indra-vdya abhiddsati bhrdt.rvya utplp\[te dubhas pat\[, iddm ahdm. tdm ddhara.m pddaydmi "The enemy who, O Indra and V~,yu, is hostile to us, who rises up against us, him do I here place low." TS 1.6.10.1 yd evalna.m pratyutpip\[te tdm ~Jpasyate "Verily he over- throws him who rises against him." A V 13.1.31b vyathrya saint(tin utpipana.m B.rhaspate "Make to stagger the kinsman who rises up (against us)." TB 3.2.9.10 m~la.m chinatti, bhrdt.rvyasyaiv6 m~la.m chinatti, m~la.m vd atit(sthad rrksd~sy dn~tpipate "He cuts the root, of his enemy indeed he cuts the root. Verily the Rak.sases rise against (attack, assail) that root which stands above the ground." In A V 5.20.7c the participle utpipdna- is used in addressing the war- drum: abhl kranda standyotpipana.h "Roar towards (the enemy), thunder, rising up (against them)."
