L'origine chiote des deux freres (271c3) provoque le commentaire suivant (L 'intrigue 104; cf. Pl. Euthyd. 179): "Cette biographie est plausible: Chios, ile de lamer Egee, proche de 1' Asie Mineure, qui fait face a Clazomene, la cite d' Anaxagore, avait ete secouee, a peu pres au moment ou Thourioi fut fondee, par une grave crise qui favorisa, semble-t-il, !'emigration chiote vers Thourioi." En realite l'on ne sait rien d'une telle 'grave crise'. Chios a contribue des navires ala flotte athenienne, pour aider a supprimer la revolte samienne; c'est tout. Et il nous est impossible de voir a quai sert 1' association des deux sophistes a Anaxagore. Les platonisants ne feront que perdre du temps en s'occupant de ces deux livres. Though the stated aim of the Sophist, surely one of the most difficult of the Platonic dialogues, is to bring the sophist's nature to light in a 'clear formula' (logos), it is generally held that the subject matter proper to the dialogue is 'what is' (to on). In the so-called core section of the Sophist (236d-264b) Plato laboriously attempts to clear up the Greek ambiguity of 'is' (estin), i.e. the equation of truth with being. Whether Plato thereby marks off different uses of the verb 'to be' (einai) is among the most disputed questions in the interpretation of the Sophist. Professor Stanley Rosen has now written an intriguing and most unorthodox commentary on the Sophist. He observes a serious flaw in the current approach( es) to reading a Platonic dialogue.
