This comprehensive study of the early fiction of Mahmud Taymur (1894- 1973) consists of an 'Einleitung', six chapters of 'Systematische Analyse' of Taymur's 79 stories written before 1934, and an 'Inventar' of summaries and commentaries on each story. The reader is also provided with lists of stories, an index and English and Arabic synopses. Mahmud Taymur's contribution to the establishment of the short story in modern Arabic literature has not yet been assessed in an entirely satisfactory way. A prerequisite for this assessment would be a reliable, detailed survey of what Taymur actually wrote, but such a survey is still lacking, in spite of the amount of attention accorded Taymur by the critics and his popularity among Arab readers. The work under review seeks to make good this deficiency for the earlier part of Taymur's writing career (1920-34) by listing all the stories he published, and in what order, and when and in what form they were reprinted.
