Lang 2004 (= EHS.T 791).229 pp. Five years have gone by since the Joint Agreement on Justi/ication between the Lutheran World Federation and the Roman Catholic Church was signed. Of course such an epoch­ making document did not come about ovemight. It was the fruit of many years of work, in the areas of biblical studies, history of theology and systematic reflection. One of the most important contributions from Lutheran biblical scholars lay in the direction of affirming the Pauline teaching of the justifying power of the Gospel. In this they laid to rest the notion that Paul refers exclusively to an extrinsic or 'forensic' form of justification, which became the hallmark of orthodox Lutheranism from the time of the Formula Concordiae onwards. Another very important contribution was made by students of the Council of Trent, espe­ cially of the sixth session on the Justification, which took place in the years 1546-1547. At the beginning of the last century the proceedings of the Council were published by the Goerresiana Society.
