T h e two concluding chapters, ' T h e T h r e a t o f Glasnost" and "The Promise o f Perestroika," .. are obviously m o s t vulnerable in this respect, though the authors' speculations strike m e as extremely level-headed and even prescient. I shall not undertake any more updat- ing here, since a lot more water will flow over the d a m before this review appears. A particularly valuable chapter is "Crimes and Punishments," w h i c h might easily have been an anecdotal conspectus o f all the lurid cases o f persecution and expulsion and sentences to h a r d labor associated with the n a m e s o f Pasternak, Siniavskii and Daniel, Lidia Chukovskaia, and others, b u t is in fact a useful description o f the intri- cate system o f sanctions by w h i c h writers are channelled into approved directions and punished for derelictions o f various kinds.
