The book under review not only presents a partial edition of the Tibetan text of the Phur pa bcu gnyis (on pp. 263–427) 1 and a sum- marising translation of all its chapters (pp. 158–175) 2 but also a discus- sion of its origins (pp. 91–148) and a provisional stemmatic analysis (pp. 243–262). In the section that precedes the edition Mayer presents a synopsis of our current state of knowledge about (the transmission of) rNying ma literature (pp. 176–242), but, of course, also discusses more specific problems with regard to the editions of the Phur pa bcu gnyis ; 3 thus he manages to make a most welcome contribution to our as for now still quite limited knowledge of this truly vast and interesting
