Without overtly addressing the massive shifts brought by the revolution, these documents (and the carefully chosen collection o f photographs) present vividly the myriad o f changes experienced by aristocrats, as well as the busy daily life that followed the revolution. The great strength o f Trubetskoi's writing lies in its expression o f ordinari- ness both in the pre- and post-revolutionary eras. He brings to the reader the emotions and habits o f two very different kinds of life, without overt philosophizing or the nostal- gia so often a part o f such writings. The memoirs concentrate on Trubetskofs entering the cavalry, his training as an offi- cer, and on aspects o f Guards maneuvers. Here Trubetskoi discusses the imperial system more explicitly, with an awareness o f the faults that allowed the system to crumble. The bribery that enabled students to pass the officers' exams, extravagant picnics during ma- neuvers, the favoritism shown by superior officers to the well-connected, the outdated training o f the calvary-Trubetskoi addresses directly these aspects o f service in the cui- rassiers.
