In the course of the breaking down of the traditional religious and socio-political barriers in Dutch society, the monopoly of the church in this area came to an end once and for all. However, one does not want to dwell on this observation. Although there have been many changes in the field of social work during the past few years, the churches and social interventions are still closely connected. By throwing off the old dead weight, the churches appear to be in the position of developing new initiatives more openly, and once again 'turn to work'. The objective of the thirteen contributions that are presented here, is therefore to show this different image of the relation between churches and social interventions. The first two articles deal with the question of church assistance in the case of individ- ual suffering. Heitink elaborates upon the distinction between spiritual and pastoral care in hospitals. In his contribution, Polspoel first enters into the aspect of meaningfulness in professions of assistance. In addition,
