REVIEWS Ancient Christian Writers (The Works of the Fathers in Trans- lation). Under this title the Newman Bookshop of Westminster, Maryland. U.S.A., has recently published the first volume of a series eclited by Johannes Quasten and Joseph C. Plumpe, Professors at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D. C.: The Epistles of St. Clement of Rome and St. Ignatius of Antioch, translated and annotated by James A. Kleist S.J., Professor of Classical Languages at St. Louis University, St. Louis, Mo., 1946. This splendidly printed volume contains 1. an introduction to the First Epistle of Clement to the Corinthians and a translation of the Epistle, the Second Epistle being omitted as the work of another author, and 2. an introduction to Ignatius and a translation of the seven Epistles preserved under the name of this author, which the translator, with the majority of modern critics, considers genuine. In addition, there are forty pages of notes at the end of the volume, and a valuable thirteen- page index of subjects and names, including characteristic Greek terms. The introductions give the necessary information which the general reader needs in order to see the authors against the background of their time,
