The use of an introductory survey like the present, on the principate of Nero, seems questionable, however skilled and competent the account may be, and in this case certainly is. To the specialist it does not offer enough - many interesting suggestions have not been worked out -, and for the layman the supply of information is too large: all kinds of details have been included which are confusing rather than clarifying. Such a book, which is intended for a wide circle of readers, should not so much be a neutral summary of the results of modern scholarship as give an impression of the figure of Nero and his time, based on this scholarship; above all it ought to allow the antique sources to speak. In short, such a book should be written by a scholar who is at the same time a writer of history. It is a pity that the talents required for such a task are only rarely found in combination. The author approaches his subject
