Franz Skiner Verlag, Wiesbaden. 249 pp. By sheer size alone the achievement of Jurji Zaidan is truly impressive, and that is despite the derivative nature of much of it. His publications include at least ten volumes on history, Islamic and otherwise, six volumes on Arabic language and history of literature, two volumes of biographies, twenty-two novels, almost all of which are historical, as well as general works on diverse subjects ranging from physiognomy and ethnology to Freemasonry. On top of all that he continued to edit, and himself produce most of the material for one of the two leading monthly cultural magazines in the Arab world, al-Hildl, from its inception in 1892 until his death in 1914. When we remember that Zaidan came from a very poor fami- ly and was largely a self-taught man and that he died at the relatively young age of fifty-three our admiration for the man's amazing industry is enhanced.
