REVIEWS Susan Thistlethwaite, Sex, Race, and God: Christian Feminism in Black and White (Crossroad: New York) 1989. The initial goal of the feminist movement was to unveil patterns of discrimination and oppression in society across the bounds of class, race and most importantly, sex. Recently feminism has come under critique for being internally discriminatory and oppressive. Hence, Audrey Lorde's question, "What is the theory behind racist feminism?" (Morasa and Anzaldua 1981, 100). Lorde's challenge has been taken up by Susan Thistlethwaite in Sex, Race, and God. Her diverse analyses of "the difference race makes" for black feminists and white feminists appear to be painstaking attempts to stave off intemecine warfare and create an unstable connection between black and white feminists through a joint struggle against violence and oppression. - Black feminists, or womanists, have begun to claim their unique experience as black women (Walker 1983). Womanists have begun to take issue with white feminists for subsuming black women's experience and history under white feminist categories of ontological sameness and the use of theoretical analysis that is patriarchal. As such, men (predominantly white middle-class) implicitly remain the decision-makers and namers of white and 260 black women's roles and experience.
