This book has as its central thesis that the Gospel of John was written independently of the Synoptic Gospels, and reflects an independent tradition which has valid claims to historical reliability at many points. This is not a new thesis, to be sure (cf. P. Gardner-Smith, Saint John and the Synoptic Gospels, 1938), but it is argued here so carefully and fully that Dodd's book will surely be regarded as a milestone in Johannine research. It has already been referred to appreciatively in two of the latest commentaries on the Fourth Gospel, Rudolf Schnackenberg, Das Johannesevangelium (Teil l, Herders Theologische Kommentar zum Neuen Testament 4), 1965, and Raymond Brown, The Gospel according to John (I-XII, The Anchor Bible 29), 1966. Both Schnackenberg and Brown take positions similar to that of Dodd.
