This book has as its central thesis that the Gospel of John was written independently of the Synoptic Gospels, and reflects an independent tradition which has valid claims to historical reliability at many points. This is not a new thesis, to be sure (cf. P. Both Schnackenberg and Brown take positions similar to that of Dodd. Dodd's primary methodological presupposition is as follows: "In comparing... a given passage in the Fourth Gospel with a parallel passage in the other gospels, we have to inquire whether there are co- incidences of language or content going beyond what might be http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Vigiliae Christianae Brill
