Religious and Sexual Nationalisms in Central and Eastern Europe — Gods, Gays and Governments isbn 978-9004297470 In curating an intriguing group of case studies that examine the matrices of religion, gender, and sexuality in Central and Eastern Europe, Sremac and Ganzevoort make a significant contribution to the study of religio-sexual nationalism. The authors study how the particular institutional apparatuses (church/mosque, state, juridical) of Central and Eastern Europe engage with lgbt groups and social movements, which is deeply interconnected with the post-Soviet power vacuum. Conflicts that develop around religio-sexual-national identities usually concern enforcing or contesting hegemonic conceptualisations of sexuality and gender, such as the preferred actors or leaders in the constitution of a post-Soviet nation. These essays recognise how suspicions of the European Union and fears of neo-liberal ‘western’ or ‘secular’ values play into contests of identity. In general, the authors in this volume carefully integrate queer and feminist theorists such as Sara Ahmed, Linda Alcoff, Michel Foucault, and Elisabeth Potter and Jasbir Puar into their essay, in ways that clarify rather than obfuscate their sociological analysis.
