Progress is slow and laborious. Substantial advances are only rarely made; comparatively recent examples are Broneer's discovery and inter- pretation of an ancient hysplex in Isthmia and Ebert's brilliant reconstruction of the pentathlon and the long jump. Both these studies are virtually ignored in the book under review, though they are mentioned in some notes and in the bibliography.
