This is a study of the historical consciousness of Tacitus within the larger framework of the historical consciousness of antiquity and the West. It centres around the problem of the constant and the variable in the human element and in the forces of history (9). It is an attempt to understand antiquity sui generis (8), and at the same time serves as a corrective to certain trends in historicism (43 ff., 184). The book comprises two parts. Part I is a systematic outline of this and related problems in western theory, ninety pages being devoted to modern, renaissance and Christian consciousness and ninety more to Greek and Roman historical consciousness. The study of Tacitus belongs to Part II under the Leitmotif `Mensch und Zeit'.
