PROVISIONAL EVALUATION OF A RECENT CONFERENCE ON JOACHIM OF FIORE EUGTNE HONPE Nijmegen Gioacchino da Fiore tra Bernardo di Clairuaux e Innocenzo III. 5° Congresso Internazionale di Studi Gioachimiti, S. Griovanni in Fiore, 16-21 settembre 1999. Nowadays, the life and works of the twelfth-century abbot, monastic reformer and theologian Joachim of Fiore receive increasing historical attention which naturally becomes more intense in his country of origin. As appears from the above title, the conference which these pages give an account of is linked with four similar meetings. The latter took place in 1979, 1984, 1989 and 1994, respectively, and they were held, just like the most recent one, in the small Italian town of San Giovanni in Fiore. At the exquisite site of this cittadina, situated high in the Sila Mountains (Calabria), in 1188/1189 Joachim founded the first and most important abbey of his new monastic order closely related to the Cistercians. Afterwards he himself was to be for ever named after this abbey situated 'inter alpes' and 'in flore'. And at this place he is regularly honoured, nowadays, by means of scientific meetings of scholars from all the corners of the world. The five above-mentioned conferences were
